One Big Change is a Kenyan-led framework returning to the country where its founding principle, Harambee, originates. It builds on Kenya's own institutions, expertise and ambition.
Policy set, practice in progress
Kenya has set its education direction through Competency-Based Education. The pioneer cohort entered Grade 10 Senior School in January 2026. CBE is now being tested in real schools, with real teachers, learners and families.
The gap is practice, not policy
Schools differ in readiness, placement has created uneven demand, and teacher confidence remains inconsistent. Retooling is necessary but does not automatically change everyday practice.
Settled enough to implement, flexible enough to improve
The policy is settled enough to implement, but implementation is still flexible enough to improve before today's gaps become embedded across future cohorts.
Designed and directed in Kenya
A Kenyan Advisory Committee keeps the work policy-aligned, practical for schools, sensitive to county contexts, and focused on sustainability. International expertise is invited only where it meets an identified Kenyan need.
From ten schools to a national learning community
Beginning with ten founding schools, the work grows into a connected national learning network where successful practice spreads through Kenyan schools.
